notes for Phased Array radar systems for weather observation

Phased arrays are viewed as a key enabling technology for weather radar systems nowadays. They can provide high temporal resolution and diversity scanning strategies that can satisfy the different needs of the meteorological scientific community. The two most significant design challenges associated with this phased array concept involve achieving a low-cost design and achieving adequate dual-polarization performance for weather sensing. The dual-polarization performance challenge refers to the need to maintain low cross-polarization levels and well-matched vertical and horizontal beam patterns as the array scans away from the boresight axis. This talk will give an overview of the current phased array radar systems and its requirements for weather observations, performance in sensitivity, antenna design requirement for dual-polarized weather radars
